Get off your ass and vote!
Now that I've got your attention, it's time I addressed a
taboo subject: Politics. On October 27th we will take to the polls for
the municipal election. In 2010, voter turnout for municipal elections was just
under 50%. To some a 50% turnout might not be that bad, but to me less than
half of our community voting is not enough. To put it another way; the majority
didn't vote. Given the impact municipal councils have on our economy,
community, and taxes, it is essential that our communities are represented by officials
with appropriate experience and diversity.
Many underestimate the impact of our municipal government but the
decisions of our local official’s impact us every day. They oversee policing,
fire departments, road maintenance, parks, education, accessible
transportation, planning and development, and are actively involved in ensuring
our local economy thrives. From renovating your home to keeping us safe, local
governments play a key role in our day-to-day lives. It is because of this that
it’s our responsibility to ensure that the right people are at the table;
representing our community and making informed and educated decisions that
protect our community’s best interests.
Now for those who haven’t had the time to go to the debates, not to
worry. With the power of the Internet everything you need to know about the
candidates and the process is just a Google away.
Included below are all the links required to educate yourself about
your candidates and cast your vote. In many local municipalities you can vote online,
eliminating the excuse of "I couldn't make it to the polls on time".
Now although I have selected the candidates I will vote for, I won’t
try to persuade you who to vote for. I will however strongly encourage you to
take the time to read the bios and platforms of the candidates and ask yourself;
does this person have the experience, knowledge, and passion to ensure our
communities thrive and continue to be a place we are proud to call home?
So get out there and vote!
