What on Earth does politics have to do with Real Estate?

 I've always been passionate about politics so I was thrilled when last month, I had the opportunity to attend the Ontario Real Estate Association’s Political Affairs Conference as a representative of my local real estate board.
While gearing up for the conference I mentioned it to my sister, who responded in her typically candid way: “What on earth does politics have to do with real estate?” So for my sister and those who have also questioned the connection; this edition of my blog is for you.
It might surprise you to know just how active Realtors are in advocating for the interests of home owners at the legislature. However, since your average Realtor isn’t spending their days at Queens Park, it is through the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) that our voice is heard.
Two of our most significant and recent accomplishments are;

Land Transfer Tax
If you've recently bought your first home, you know how much work was involved in saving up for your required down payment, closing cost, moving expenses, and any repairs or upgrades that needed to be done. So you no doubt appreciated the significant rebate on your land transfer tax. In 2007 OREA lobbied the province to expand the Land Transfer Tax Rebate, saving first time buyers thousands in tax at a time when they, undoubtedly, could use the break.

Mandatory Home Energy Audits
You might recall that in 2009, news broke that the Provincial Government was considering imposing a mandatory Home Energy Audit on the resale of private homes. Although an energy audit can be a useful tool, Realtors didn't want their clients to have to bear an additional financial burden when trying to sell their property. Again, OREA lobbied in the interest of home owners, and amendments were made that allowed energy audits to be waived in resale transactions. This not only prevented an additional cost to sell your home, but it also minimizes potential headaches and delays, while scheduling and waiting for an audit.
These are just a couple examples of what Realtors have done for home owners through the Ontario Real Estate Association and advocacy at Queens Park. However, there is more to come to ensure the interests of home owners are protected. Fortunately, Relators are committed to doing just that.
